چکیده

This study concerns the interaction of pitch, morphology and vowel length in Tłîchô Yatiì (Dogrib) and Dene Sųłine (Chipewyan), Dene (Athabaskan) tone languages of the Mackenzie River Drainage. Starting from an earlier study we extend it to investigate the realization of tone on long vowels in Tłîchô Yatiì. Our results indicate that slope is a feature of vowel length contrast.

Using Discrete Cosine Transforms to Characterize Tones in Two Athabaskan Languages

Tone in North American languages has received very little phonetic attention. This paper is a preliminary analysis of the production of lexical tone in two related bitonal (H/L) Athabaskan languages spoken in Northwestern Canada: Dene Sųłine (Chipewayan) and Tlįchǫ Yatiì (Dogrib). The Dene languages are divided into two groups, those without tone (Alaska, Yukon and the Pacific coast) and the to...

Dene stop contrasts: Data from Délįnę Slavey

This paper presents the results of an acoustic study of stop contrasts in Slavey, a Dene (Athabaskan) language with a three-way laryngeal contrast. Stops in 8 speakers were measured. In addition to durational differences between the stops, burst intensity was found to be important for distinguishing aspirated stops from plain and ejective stops, and coarticulatory effects on the following vowel...

UNIFORM AND SEMI-UNIFORM TOPOLOGY ON GENERAL FUZZY AUTOMATA

In this paper, we dene the concepts of compatibility between twofuzzy subsets on Q, the set of states of a max- min general fuzzy automatonand transitivity in a max-min general fuzzy automaton. We then construct auniform structure on Q, and dene a topology on it. We also dene the conceptof semi-uniform structures on a nonempty set X and construct a semi-uniformstructure on the set of states of ...

Phonetics of intonation in South African Bantu languages

Much is already known about the prosodic systems of the indigenous South African languages from descriptions and analyses in the existing literature. All of the existing work has been carried out in the field of African studies or formal linguistics. In order to be able to implement the generalisations obtained into computational models in speech processing, the existing sources and results mus...

Linguistic Phylogenies Support Back-Migration from Beringia to Asia

Recent arguments connecting Na-Dene languages of North America with Yeniseian languages of Siberia have been used to assert proof for the origin of Native Americans in central or western Asia. We apply phylogenetic methods to test support for this hypothesis against an alternative hypothesis that Yeniseian represents a back-migration to Asia from a Beringian ancestral population. We coded a lin...
